Rampriya House
Rampriya House is a beautiful colonial mansion of the erstwhile Pratapgarh State from Sombanshi dynasty.
The abode originally belonged to ‘Hteiktin Ma Lat’ a Burmese princess of the Royal House of Konbaung, the last dynasty that ruled Burma or Myanmar from 1752 to 1885. Princess Ma Lat was the daughter of Prince Limbin Mintha, brother of King Thibaw of Burma who was exiled by the British to India in 1885. The Princess spent her early years in Allahabad and studied at Girl’s High School of Allahabad (1861).
‘Ma Lat’ was in her teens when met the German Crown Prince Kaiser Wilhelm II in Allahabad, who thought her the most striking woman he encountered on his Asian tour. Wilhelm II was the last German Emperor reigning from 1888 – 1918 shortly before Germany’s defeat in World War I. Son of Prussian prince Frederick Wilhelm and Victoria, Princess Royal (Queen Victoria’s eldest child).
In the late 1800s the mansion was purchased by then Raja of Pratapgarh – Pratap Bahadur who named it ‘Rampriya House’ after his first wife Rani Rampriya.
Rampriya House has a long and distinguished history, has played host to many notable guests including the Maharaja of Baroda ‘Sayajirao Gaekwad III’ (Gaekwad dynasty) who visited Allahabad for an international exhibition. Raja Pratapgarh invited him to stay in this house and built quarters within the bungalow to accommodate his big staff.
