Allahabad and Architecture:
Allahabad the erstwhile ‘Little England’ is a classic case of English flair that one would certainly feel on his en route to the privilege past. The charm of the city is nothing but rejoicing of the one-time European attitude that lie in its Colonial Era Mansions, Vintage Halls, Gothic Churches and Historic Institutions metaphoric to the great glory of the British Empire.
The façade of this majestic city is a blend of the most beautiful European styles that flourished during the Victorian Age say; Gothic, Indo Saracenic, Roman-Italianate, English Baroque, Scottish Baronial are some to name a few.
Once the capital of the United Provinces the city has been an integral part of India’s modern history and the architectural profiles found here have immensely contributed towards the building of modern day India.
The Tour the Architecture here is nothing sort of an exciting opportunity for the seekers to explore the unexplored landmarks & Hallways of this Heritage City while relishing on the legacy of the former colonial power where the days of Company ended and the days of Raj began in India.
Design & Philosophy:
The origination of the British Raj post 1857 happened in parallel with the introduction of new architectural styles (Mughal Gothic, Hindu Gothic) that were primarily meant to represent the legitimacy of the British Raj and at the same time promoting the invincibility of the Great British Empire.
The design philosophy of mixing European architecture with Indian elements was more political for British rulers rather than any aesthetical belief, this was only to aid themselves as rulers exerting immense political leverage over the regional powers (The Princely States) and allowing them to stay in power while they (the British) ensured their utmost homogeneity and intimacy among Indians making their presence more palatable in the culture.
