Prayag by Mythology
As per Hindu mythology Brahma – the Hindu Creator God conducted the first (Pra) Ten Yajnas (Yag) at Dashaswamedh Ghat (Temple) in Daragunj old city. Considering that Lord Brahma lives one hundred celestial years which is equivalent to 311.04 trillion years (currently in 55th year of Brahma) we assume that Brahma performed the first Ten Yajnas when he was twenty years of age.
Lord Rama visited Prayag twice during his lifetime, The first; while staying at the Ashram of Rishi Bharadwaj (the revered Vedic sage of Ancient India & the Father of Indian Medicine – Ayurveda) Rama made his visit to Veni Madhav Temple along with goddess Sita and brother Lakshman in the course of their fourteen-year-long exile. At the Ashram, sage Bharadwaj asks them to stay with him throughout the banishment, but they insist on going deeper into the forests of Chitrakoot. It was at Shringverpur – Prayag where Guha – Nishad, the king of boatmen, washed Rama’s feet & helped them cross the Ganges before going to the forest on exile. The Second; After killing Ravana, the Pushpak Viman (Mythological aero plane of flowers) carrying Lord Rama, Lakshman and Hanuman and the victorious army of monkeys and bears stopped over at Prayag again where Lord Rama and Lakshman did ‘Prayashchit’ for having killed the Brahmanas in Lanka. Besides Lord Rama, Bharat along with Sumant also visited Prayag and Bharadvaj Rishi’s Ashram on his quest to search Lord Rama for re-union and to bring Rama, Sita and Lakshman back to Ayodhya.
As per Vinay Patrika ‘Gautam Buddha’ too had traversed through Prayag in 450 B.C.
About 500 years ago, Lord Chaitanya preached the essential principals of devotion to Rupa Goswami for ten days at Dashaswamedh Prayag Ghat leaving his foot prints at the epic Veni Madhava Temple, where Lord Chaitanya used to sing and dance on a daily basis. Lord Chaitanya stayed for three nights at Naag Vasuki Mandir. It was during the same period of time when Mirabai (the Hindu mystic poet of the Bhakti Movement) visited the old city Daragunj and composed the famous devotional poem “Chalo Man Ganga Yamuna Teer” while staying at Badi Kothi (Haveli). In 1575, Moghul Emperor Akbar named Prayag as Ilahabad – City of God- also called Allahabad. Founder of Arya Samaj Dayanand Saraswati too stayed at Naag Vasuki Mandir for three nights.
Prayag is an important religious center with hundreds of Hindu temples, such as Alopin Devi (Shaktipeeth), Kalyani Devi (Shaktipeeth), Lalita Devi (Shaktipeeth), Dashaswamedh Temple, Veni – Madhav Temple, Naag – Vasuki temple, Shri Asimadhav temple, Bade Hanumaanji temple, and Someshwar Mahadev temple. It is considered inappropriate to skip a visit to ancient temples of Prayagraj specially the 12 Madhav temples after taking the dip in the mighty waters of river Ganges at the Dashaswamedh Ghat.
