The Chronicles of Alfred Park
A heritage trail to discover Alfred Park’s hidden treasures
The quintessential British park also known as ‘Company Bagh’ was built in the year 1870 and is named after Queen Victoria’s second son ‘Prince Alfred’ and he arrived in Allahabad during the winters of 1869 during his voyage around the world.
The park was designed to give pleasure to the most cultured eyes of then lords and ladies and has characteristics which are very similar to the erstwhile parks of Victorian England.
A walking tour of the park offers a thrilling opportunity for the walkers to delve into park’s fascinating history and throws a glimpse of how the park came into its real existence and ultimately becoming the ‘Theatre of British Glory’.
Being a big park it has some of very important heritage and recreational sites: The Victoria memorial inside the garden made up of Italian limestone is highly regarded for its English Baroque architecture where In the midst of it there stands the ever beautiful ‘Thornhill Mayne Memorial’ or the Public Library, with its Scottish Baronial Architecture the building is one among the finest in the country. Interestingly the same style of architecture has been the chief inspiration behind the creation of Hogwarts Castle in the Harry Potter films.
The tour covers the most exciting facets of the park where one gets to see things most people don’t get to see, hear tales people don’t get to hear and explore sites people don’t get to explore including the sites of 1857 holocaust: the broken mosque, graves of the rebellions & the guns of destruction.

The Sail of Ecstasy
The Sail of Ecstasy
Yachting at the pristine waters of mighty Ganges is an unmissable play a perfect ecstasy of spirits filled with excitement and experiential delights that tune in harmony with the untraveled waters of History, Culture and Civilizations of the chronicle past.
On the Tour
A Private boat at your leisure will slowly ferry you along the Ganges on a fascinating ride. You will get to feel both the religious and historic aspect of the River as you sail along. We start our tour at the epic ‘Mankameshwar’ temple where ‘Mankameshwar’ means God who fulfills the wishes. The Shivling inside the temple is believed to have been installed by Lord Rama himself on his way to Chitrakoot.
The legends of Akbar’s Fort:
The massive Fort was built in the year 1583 & was captured by The British ‘East India Company’ in 1798. The fort is world famous for its 3rd century Ashoka pillar and the underground temple called ‘Patalpuri mandir’ the holy site among the most ancient temples was visited by Lord Rama, Bhakt Prahalada followed by famous Chinese traveler ‘Hiuen Tsang’ who is said to have visited this temple in the 7th century CE. An ancient Palace can be seen overlooking the Yamuna that was once the residence of company officials. The fort is one among the largest garrisons in India right from the British times. The much revered Akshayavat or the Undying Banyan Tree is situated firm close to the south wall and can be viewed along our boat ride. In the olden days the pilgrims use to throw themselves from the tree in order to attain salvation.
The Great Mosque:
‘Jumma Masjid’ was a stately building advantageously adjacent to Akbar’s Fort sprawled on the banks of river Yamuna. After the conquest of the province by the East India Company it was filled up as the residence of general of station to the purpose of assembly room. On the boat ride one can easily identify the remains of the mosque also the wrecked port that was used by the British East Company to dock their ships in early 1800’s.
Triveni Sangam:
Triveni Sangam is the holy confluence of three rivers: Ganga, Yamuna and the mystical river Saraswati. The three rivers continue to retain their distinctiveness and piousness as they unite at the holy Sangam, while the Yamuna is deep, calm, and green in color the Ganges is shallow, forceful, and clear. It is here where the world’s largest religious congregation takes place ‘The Kumbha Mela’ which is held here on the interval of every 6, 12 and 144 years. A dip at Sangam is said to free one of all sins committed on Earth and librates from the cycle of rebirth.
The Bridges:
The city is home to country’s most important bridges. One British era engineering marvel while the other is nation’s hanging jewel of the 21st Century.
The Truss Bridge:
The Old Naini Bridge (1859 -1865) is a Double – Decked steel truss bridge that runs across the river Yamuna. The bridge is one among the oldest surviving railway bridges in India. It was the Howrah – Delhi main line that was opened to allow the first through train to travel from Kolkata to Delhi via Allahabad in 1866.
In 1846 the ‘East Indian Railway Company’ conducted a survey under the headship of its MD Sir Rowland to establish a railway route from Calcutta (commercial capital) to Delhi of which the construction began in 1851.
The Bridge comprises 14 pillars of 200 feet each where the 13th one is regarded for its unique character that has been shaped in the form of ‘Elephant’s Foot’.
British civil engineer Sir Alexander Meadows Rendel was the one behind the design of this gigantic wonder. The steel used in the construction of the bridge was imported from England as India had no iron works at that time.
The New Bridge:
Built in 2004 it is the only cable-stayed bridge in the state of Uttar Pradesh and also the third longest in Country. It was HDEC (Hyundai Engineering and Construction, S.Korea) that supervised the construction of this hanging marvel under COWI, Denmark. In the evening hours of the sunset the bridge is jam-packed by the young brigade taking ‘Selfies’ while on certain occasions one can also witness motor bike stunts by the local motorists.
